Moving/lifting objects the incorrect way is the number one cause of on-the-job accidents nationwide and the second leading causes of reported injuries for SONOCO:
- Strains/sprains: To muscles and joints by overexertion
- Hernias
: Strain of lifting causes ruptures in the stomach wall
- Fractures
: Dropping heavy loads on hands, feet, toes
- Wounds
: Caused by sharp edges, rough surfaces
FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES TO HELP PREVENT ACCIDENTS INVOLVING IMPROPER LIFTING:
- Select the location
to place the item(s) to be lifted
- Clear walking path
of all obstructions
- Size up the load:
weight, shape, and path to use
- Wear safety shoes:
be sure of footing
- Bend at the knees
, lift with legs, not back
- Keep proper body balance:
feet - waist - shoulders
- Do not twist
when lifting, move feet instead
- Do not jerk load
, use steady movement
- Squat, bend at knees
, do not stoop and bend at waist
- Keep object close to body
while lifting
- Get help
if load is too heavy or bulky, or make more than one trip by dividing load
- Do not carry
an item that obstructs your vision, get help
- Do not carry
excessive loads up or down stairs, get help
- Clear path
of obstructions from grocery box to storage area
- Wear SAFE-T-LIFT BELT
. Each employee is issued a safe-t-lift belt upon hire. If you do not have one, contact SONOCO safety department to have one issued to you.
